Morrigan: Dragon Age Origins Skirt Tutorial

1158958_orig

Unfortunately I didn’t take too many WIP photos for this part of the project, Ill try and explain as best I can however.

Basically I measured my hip measurement and then the length I wanted the base skirt to be.

I then drew out a large rectangle by those measurements (longer at the back) making it a little bit longer for the front pieces to over lap.
I then cut it out in the vinyl / leather Making sure the back was at the center. (front opening)

I then held it up to myself and worked out where I wanted the two back seams. (refer to this image)
I then cut those two lines I drew for placement, and sewed them back together again.
(I did this because there was a lot of gappiness from the rectangle pattern I used, so this helped with the fitting.)

For the front I sewed two snap clips into the overlapping sections.

The belts were really easy, just incredibly time consuming. I drew straight onto the back of the vinyl the shape and length I wanted for each one, and cut it out on the fold (so i had two of the same pieces). I then super glued the edges together and put around 4 or 5 eyelets in each one.
I then would super glue the belt to the skirt.
This was a lot more sturdy than you’d imagine.

I used white top stitching thread to sew the white detailing into the skirt.
The Belt

The belt I just measured how long I wanted it to be around my body (the large section)
and then drew up a general shape onto the vinyl. I cut it out twice and hand sewed around it with black thread.
Once I’d done that I cut my white fur trim into a long thin strip (I used the same trim they use for santa costumes), and sandwiched it between the seam allowance i left from hand sewing earlier.
I then used white top stitching thread (really thick) and hand sewed around it again.

Then I measured how much more vinyl I’d need to make it close, drew out the thin strip on vinyl and cut it out twice. Stitched it together and then stitched one side to the back end of the large belt section.
The two front sections I hand sewed a snap clip to.

Viola, Done!

(I also did some aging with water colour paints and charcoal afterward)

Morrigan; Dragon Age Origins Cowl Tutorial

The Cowl

2785442
Firstly I followedย THISย tutorial on how to make a draped cowl neckline.

Now when I did this, I followed their instructions of lowering the neck line 3-5 inches, ignoring what I actually wanted for my own project.
This resulted in Image 1 & 2 <——-

For the 3rd and 4th Images, I ended up lowering the neckline a further 13 – 14 inches, this I was far happier with.

I used thisย tutorial for the hood pattern
I just attached it to the top pieces of the cowl, pretty straightforward.

After lining the cowl,
I decided that I wasn’t happy with the colour choice at all, but i didnt want to have to remake the entire thing – so I dyed it.
(see below)

1786981_orig

I used iPoly dye in Magenta to get the colour I wanted. Because the purple original fabric was quite dark and heavy, I opted for Magenta over the accurate dark red as it would have come out too dark on the already darkly dyed fabric.

After finally dying it, I still wasnt happy with the fit. So I unpicked the top sections that the hood was attached to and cut it down about 5cm, so it would be more flattering on me.

(See bottom of top picture for end result)

Cosplay Update!

So its been a little while since ive done anything major, still has. however I’ve been very slowly doing little bits and pieces for upcoming costumes.

My contact lenses for Morrigan arrived!
They are from Honey Color and are the ‘Yellow Eclipse Halloween Lens”ย

Enjoy a no make up / creepy stare selfie

I started piecing together the fabric for Coles pants
I’m using a brown corduroy rather than pleather as pleather doesn’t sit as nicely with such articulation.

I began pattern making my Morrigan gown at long last!
Its my first time doing a ballgown so its very rough (hence the abnormal length which ill have to deal with) at the moment.
But basically the paper pattern in the center will be a wine or dark red taffeta i might add some embellishment to, and the calico pieces in the photo will be black velvet.

Morrigan Robes WIP

Hello again!

So since the last update I’ve made the bikini and belt (I added fluff because I liked it on the concept art) and lined the skirt belts with leather.

**** The white beads and some of the gold beads are breaking off because I painted the underside with acrylic paint (which likes to peel)
So that’ll all be repaired asap.

All thats left is the shoulder pauldron, the sleeve, the bracers and the leggings.

also need to bead the middle of the bikini and buy the wig + shoeses.
i bought the contacts last night!

Morrigan gown cosplay (DA:I)

Hello chaps!
So I completely forgot to make a post about this, my hoop skirt for Morrigan arrived!
Its not the ‘perfect’ shape for accuracy, but I am happy with it nonetheless. I also have faith that the very long corset will help in pressing down the front and back a little bit.

Once the skirting is all made up, I may attempt some sort of squishy system at the bottom of the skirt so its less bell shaped and more like the actual costume. It’ll depend on how happy I am with results.

Morrigan Gown Brooch,

Hello again! A long time it has been since my last post. I’ve been procrastinating and avoiding making things since my little holiday over a month ago – its been very difficult to get back into the swing of things.

Anyway, at long last I produced something note worthy – Morrigans brooch!
Its not quite the same design due to the crumblyness of the clay I used unfortunately but I’m still happy with it for now. I Might remake it with worbla if I have time and reason.

I basically just sculpted the shape, waited for it to dry before base painting it black then the final coat, dry brushing with gold paint. I then super glued the feathers (coloured rooster feathers from ebay!) onto the back at the top and then covered the back with some faux suede. I still have to put the clip in but its very likely ill just safety pin it on.

More Morrigan progress!

I’ve been busily working away at my Morrigan skirt!
Making oodles of impractical ‘belts’ and such, taking quite a bit of my time.

But here is where I am up to!

This was taken while i was working away at the belts.
I cut out a belt shape while the vinyl was folded, and then hand sewed and eventually superglued (I became lazy very quickly), the two sides together. then put the eyelets in!

Obviously still needs A LOT more work. (White x stitches, Lining on the base belts,, weathering, fur trims, the actual waist belt etc) but I am happy with how its coming along!

It doesnt look like it fits very nicely on the mannequin, but it fits me fine! xx
